11g R1 features overview- an enhanced and extended edition of 10g ?

We all know that Oracle database 10g is something like evolution toward grid computing comparing to 9i, a lot of revolutional concept like CRS,ASM is been introduced and accepted rapidly. while the features of 11g release one(R1) is more like an enhanced and extended version of 10g. because a lot of features of 11g have origin from 10g.
11g 's main focus area

  • The first focus of 11g is manageability , which has been one of the objective of 10g, Oracle continue to push the database technology into a self managing database. and 11g is a step further in the road. mightbe someday, the role DBA will begin to take less important role in the IT maintainence roles cause It 's getting easier and easier to manage the database now!
  • Availabitlity has been an important area since the introduction of OPS or RAC and dataguard, Now there 's more concept been introduced to reduce the production database downtime

With the concept of snapshot standby database , It is now easy and quick to prepare a testing enviroment from the production database. By combining the DB replay feature which could also move production workload the testing enviroment in addition to data. Most of the performance, upgrade ,system change issue is supposed to be resolved in the testing enviroment before making really change at the production. and other features like the online patching is all targeted at the availability of reduce the down time intentionly or accidentally!

  • Recentlty Greener IT is a hot topic , and the concept of table compression (data compression) might begin to take more important roles because the explosion of the data, It is first introduced by 10g and is designed to reduce storage requirement of database using technique like applying zip to data before putting it into storage.

While 10g table compression is suggested to be used with OLAP-type data or data warehousing, 11g extend the feature for more general use even with ordinary OLTP system.

Oracle also keep enhancing the feature of ILM(information life cycle management ) , which could reduce the cost by moving non-important data to cheaper storage.

You could see from these features that 11g is something like a better 10g by continuing to enhance and extend every aspect of 10g.
And database performance enhancement, which has been a long existing mysterious for many inexperience user, we will talk about later!
